Across the country, frustration is boiling over. Protests are growing, voices are getting louder, and Americans are beginning to demand real resistance to the authoritarian slide happening in plain sight.
As Jesse Dolemore pointed out in his recent commentary, the tone of public protests is shifting. It is no longer just about opposing Donald Trump’s policies—it’s about holding Democrats accountable for their failure to act as a real opposition party.
This is an undeniable step in the right direction. But let’s be clear—neither the public nor congressional Democrats are nearly angry enough.
Democrats Are Still in Denial
There is no clearer sign of political decay than the fact that congressional Democrats seem more annoyed at their own constituents than at the Republicans dismantling democracy.
As Axios reported, Democratic offices are being flooded with calls from Americans demanding that they fight harder. But instead of taking this as a sign that they need to do more, some are whining that expectations are too high:
“Some lawmakers feel their grassroots base is setting expectations too high for what Democrats can actually accomplish as the minority party.” – Axios
Excuse me? Expectations are too high?
Where were those concerns when Republicans, also in the minority, refused to allow Democrats to govern for two straight years? When they shut down Supreme Court nominations, filibustered basic legislation, and obstructed every single effort at accountability?
✔ Republicans never accept “minority status” as a reason to stop fighting.
✔ Republicans don’t seek common ground with Democrats—they sabotage them.
✔ Republicans don’t waste time asking if their base is “expecting too much”—they weaponize that anger into political power.
Meanwhile, Democrats call for unity and plead for bipartisanship with the very people trying to dismantle the Republic. They are fundamentally unserious about the crisis at hand.
The Public Is Waking Up—But They Are Still Not Angry Enough
Dolemore is right—the American public is more engaged than ever, and that is a massive step forward. But if we’re being honest, they are still not angry enough.
Yes, there are protests. Yes, there are calls flooding congressional offices. But let’s compare this moment to past movements:
✔ The Civil Rights movement had mass sit-ins, boycotts, and weeks of sustained protest.
✔ The Vietnam War protests shut down streets, campuses, and even government offices.
✔ The Women’s March after Trump’s election drew millions nationwide.
Today, most Americans are still watching from the sidelines.
✔ Where are the strikes?
✔ Where are the national disruptions?
✔ Where is the refusal to accept business as usual?
Until the public truly escalates its resistance, Democrats will continue taking their base for granted—and Republicans will keep exploiting that weakness.
This Is a Moment for Uncompromising Resistance
Dolemore is right: this is a moment for protest, for uprising, for clawing back power.
✔ If Democrats won’t fight, they need to be replaced.
✔ If Americans aren’t outraged enough yet, they need to wake up—because worse is coming.
✔ If politicians won’t do their jobs, the public needs to make them.
The country’s survival depends on whether Americans—and their supposed representatives—realize that resistance isn’t just an option anymore. It’s a necessity.
