Josh Hawley vs. Zuckerberg: A MAGA Showdown Built on Hypocrisy

It’s hard not to smirk at the political theater of Josh Hawley—a senator with a long record of defending authoritarian tactics when convenient—wagging his finger at Mark Zuckerberg for behaving like an oligarch. In a recent Senate hearing, Hawley thundered about Facebook’s censorship tools and alleged collusion with China, painting Zuckerberg as a global villain who bends free speech to his will.

But let’s not forget: Hawley himself cheered on a U.S. president who openly called for media blacklists, encouraged disinformation, and attempted to overturn an election. If Zuckerberg is an oligarch, what exactly does that make Hawley, who fist-pumped a crowd on the verge of insurrection?

The deeper irony here is that both men weaponize outrage in service of power. Zuckerberg commodifies it through algorithmic engagement and data mining. Hawley harnesses it through populist grievance, posturing as a warrior for the people while protecting the billionaires underwriting the very chaos he decries. His sudden concern for whistleblowers rings hollow when he’s backed political movements that vilify journalists and suppress dissent. The truth is, authoritarianism wears many masks—some in Silicon Valley, others on Capitol Hill.

Pots Calling Kettles Black

Yes, Facebook deserves scrutiny for its transnational abuses and anti-democratic behavior. But it’s laughable to pretend Hawley is the savior of free speech when he’s spent years undermining it in practice. This is not a reckoning—it’s a turf war among elites, each angling for control over the flow of truth in an increasingly manipulated information age.

Let’s not confuse this performance for principle, or REALITY.
